Thurs: Assembly to Vote on "Gulag" Bill

TELL ASSEMBLY MEMBERS TO AMEND
OR OPPOSE GUN OWNER "GULAG" BILL

On Thursday, March 24, the full NJ Assembly is scheduled to vote on A2426 the gun owner "gulag" bill which, despite amendments, still has lingering issues which could land honest gun owners in jail for years while awaiting trial over purely technical infractions despite the absence of any violent criminal behavior.

Though many gun owner concerns were heard and addressed in committee amendments earlier this month, there is still one remaining issue that needs to be addressed: possession of a large class of semi-automatic firearms that were formerly legal to own but were banned in the early 1990's.  Honest gun owners were turned into criminals with the stroke of a pen back then, and the window to sell, transport, or even destroy these firearms closed long ago, so those who missed that window have had no legal avenue to divest themselves of these firearms.  Under A2426, anyone still in possession of these firearms now faces being thrown in the gulag for years while they await their day in court.

Please click here to email all Assembly members.  Tell them to either further amend A2426 to eliminate all unintended impacts on honest gun owners not involved in violent criminal behavior, or oppose the bill.  The bill's committee amendments already dropped most unintended impacts - now the full Assembly needs to go the distance and eliminate all of them.  There is no credible argument that someone turned into a criminal by an old law, with no current way to comply with that old law, should rot in jail for years while awaiting trial.  That outcome would be outrageous and unfair.

Please watch for further updates and alerts as this issue unfolds.
