SENATE "GULAG" BILL AMENDED
TO ADDRESS GUN OWNER CONCERNS

June 14, 2022.  Yesterday, in a unanimous vote, the Senate version of the gun owner "gulag" bill (S-513) was amended by the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee to address nearly all of the concerns previously raised by law-abiding firearms owners.

As amended, S-513 now requires the existence of serious criminal misconduct in order for pre-trial imprisonment to apply.  In most circumstances, mere technical possessory infractions without the addition of serious criminal acts are now insufficient to throw honest gun owners in jail while awaiting trial.

The Senate version of this legislation is now different than the version previously passed in the Assembly, and the two versions need to be reconciled in order for the legislation to make its way to the governor's desk.  But the Assembly version was also previously amended to address most gun owner concerns, so whichever version emerges will be significantly improved over the legislation as originally introduced.

Thank you for your past efforts on this legislation.  Thanks to your work, a major threat to honest gun owners appears to have been avoided.
