GUN OWNER "GULAG" BILL AMENDED |
Pre-Trial Imprisonment for Most Technical Infractions Eliminated
Honest Gun Owners Still Get the "Gulag" For Possession of Certain Banned Semi-Automatic Firearms Further Amendments Remain Possible As the Legislation Advances |
March 14, 2022. In response to an enormous outcry from law-abiding gun owners, A-2426 was amended today by the NJ Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee to dramatically reduce its impact on honest gun owners. Most "possession-only" offenses where there is no violent criminal behavior no longer result in pre-trial imprisonment.
Despite this very significant result, the amendments fail to address one serious remaining technical issue that threatens honest gun owners: inadvertent possession of classes of semi-automatic firearms that have become banned. There is no current mechanism for gun owners to sell, turn in, destroy, or transfer such firearms, so those charged with their mere possession would still be forced to rot in jail for years while awaiting trial. However, further amendments to this legislation are still possible as it moves through the legislature, and ANJRPC and NRA will continue to pursue resolution of this final issue. Please act upon follow-up alerts that we may issue if we cannot resolve this final concern behind the scenes. Thank you for answering the call on this legislation. Despite the lingering issue that still needs to be addressed, gun owners nevertheless made significant headway on this bill and resolved most of the concerns it raised. This result would not have been possible without gun owners speaking out with one unified voice. Please watch for further updates and alerts on this issue. |
