"Gulag" Bill Moves in Assembly, But Stalls in Senate

GUN OWNER "GULAG" BILL
MOVES IN ASSEMBLY BUT STALLS IN SENATE

March 28, 2022. Last week, the gun owner "gulag" bill was
not amended to address the one remaining concern of honest gun owners (pre-trial imprisonment for possessing certain classes of semi-automatic firearms that have become banned). In a partisan vote, the legislation passed in the Assembly (click here, scroll down to "session voting," then click "roll call" to see the full vote).

However, the Senate version of the bill has stalled and does not appear likely to move in the full Senate in its current form. A Senate committee heard the bill last week, but took no action to move it on to the full Senate. A Senate sponsor of the bill publicly commented that the bill goes "too far" (click here for news coverage) and indicated that he intends to introduce a different version of the bill in the future.

If the Senate passes a different version of the bill than the one passed in the Assembly, then neither version will go to the governor's desk until the different versions are reconciled back in the Assembly. As a practical matter, this process is likely to take a couple of months, so there is no need for gun owners to take imminent action on this legislation at this time.
