July 16, 2019. Today, Governor Murphy signed two anti-gun bills into law, as 4 others stalled due to lack of action in the NJ Senate. The two bills signed into law are the repeal and replacement of NJ's "smart" gun law (A1016 / S101), and a bill intended to punish criminals but that fails to protect honest citizens from wrongful prosecution (A5454 / S3897).
The four anti-gun bills that stalled and didn't make it to the Governor's desk at this time are: A3696 / S2240 (making firearms inaccessible when not in use); A5452 / S3876 (FID card renewal and mandatory training for ownership of firearms); A5453 / S3879 (intended to punish criminals but contains hidden traps that affect honest gun owners), and A5455 / S3898 (electronic reporting of gun and ammunition sales only involving law-abiding citizens).
The new smart gun law signed by the Governor swaps one legislative mandate for another, repealing the 2002 ban on the sale or transfer of all conventional handguns, but forcing all NJ dealers to carry smart guns to compel market acceptance. The law is an obvious ploy to temporarily roll back the 2002 ban long enough to force an artificial market for the technology, before re-imposing the conventional handgun ban. Ironically, NJ's inability to just let market forces naturally determine the future of the technology is the very thing that will compel gun owners to ignore it.
