June 13, 2019. After hearing several hours of testimony, today the New Jersey Assembly Judiciary Committee moved a package of gun bills, including 6 bills opposed by ANJRPC and NRA (A1016, A3696, A5452, A5453, A5454, and A5455).
Today's action is just the first step in the legislative process. Before any of the bills could become law, they would have to first be considered by the full Assembly and would also have to pass both in Senate committee, and in the full Senate. While Assembly action is anticipated, no dates for advancement of the bills in Senate committee or the full Senate itself have yet been announced.
The bills that moved today either affect only law-abiding citizens (who do not perpetrate crimes and represent a threat to no one), or fail to protect honest citizens from wrongful prosecution under careless wording.
Anti-gun activists wearing red and pink t-shirts testified at the meeting, as did leaders of several pro-gun organizations, including ANJRPC and NRA. Testimony against the bills was given by ANJRPC Executive Director and NRA Board Member Scott Bach, ANJRPC Executive VP and NRA board member Anthony Colandro, ANJRPC Regional VPs Bob Viden, Larry Braico and Craig Dear, and NRA-ILA State & Local Affairs Representative Darin Goens, among others.
One key moment occurred when Assembly Majority Leader Louis Greenwald (D-6), during testimony in support of the bills, publicly asked Bach to dialogue directly with him over gun owner concerns. Although Bach offered to do so on the spot, the Majority Leader declined but offered to do so in the coming weeks.
