2024-2025 Firearms Training Classes

In response to unprecedented demand for firearms training, ANJRPC has launched a major expansion of its NRA-certified firearms training program. 

The schedule includes NRA-certified basic "First Steps” training classes in pistol, rifle, shotgun and Range Safety Officer training (see Training Calendar below). 

The training schedule also includes full-day classes, instructor training, and other popular classes, including personal protection in the home.

All classes are NRA-certified.

FIRST Steps - Firearms Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training - is the National Rifle Association's response to the American public's need for a firearm orientation program for new purchasers. New Firearm owners are encouraged to take the "first step" of obtaining training, and the NRA FIRST Steps Program is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation of one specific firearm model.

Since FIRST Steps orientations are model-specific, and teach only the most basic shooting skills, they are not complete "courses" in the traditional sense of the word. They do provide a thorough introduction to firearm safety, handling, and shooting skills. These skills require regular practice. Initially, this practice should take place under the supervision of a qualified individual - like an NRA Certified Instructor or NRA Shooting Coach. For this reason, the orientation encourages participants to obtain additional training in an NRA Basic Firearm Training Course and then take the "next step" by participating in other local activities designed to help individuals maintain and develop their shooting skills.

NRA Basic Pistol Classes
Intended for beginners or as a refresher for experienced shooters this course will teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely. The course is a minimum of 8 hours and covers the following topics:

• Pistol knowledge and safe gun handling
• Ammunition knowledge and the fundamentals of pistol shooting
• Firing the first shots
• Benchrest and Two-Handed Standing shooting positions
• Pistol sports and activities

NRA Basic Rifle Classes
Intended for beginners or as a refresher for experienced shooters this course will teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for the safe use of  a rifle in target shooting. The course is a minimum of 14 hours and covers the following topics:

• Rifle knowledge and safe gun handling
• Ammunition knowledge and the fundamentals of rifle shooting
• Firing the first shots
• Standing rifle shooting positions
• Prone and kneeling rifle shooting positions
• Sitting rifle shooting positions and a review of positions
• Rifle sports and activities

• Shotgun knowledge and safe gun handling
• Ammunition knowledge and the fundamentals of shotgun shooting
• Firing the first shots
• Shotgun shooting skills and practical exercise
• Shotgun games and activities

Intended for beginners or as a refresher for experienced shooters, this course will develop the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a muzzleloading rifle. This course is a minimum of 12 hours and covers the following topics:

• Rifle knowledge and safe gun handling
• Black powder and loading the muzzleloading rifle
• Firing and cleaning the muzzleloading rifle
• Shooting from the standing position
• Shooting from the crossed sticks (sitting) position
• Rifle games and activities

• Rules for safe gun handling
• Identifying and unloading different firearms
• Practical exercises in safe gun handling
• Types of ammunition
• Cleaning and storage of firearms

NRA Basic Personal Protection Inside the Home
Course participants must be EXPERIENCED shooters (mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm). Validation of shooting experience can be any one of the following:

• NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate
• NRA Marksman Qualification Program (pistol disciplines)
• Pistol qualification card
• Military DD 214 with pistol qualification
• Concealed carry permit

This course will develop in the students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family within their home, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense. This course is a minimum of 8 hours and may take more time as required to meet the mandatory performance objectives.

NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home Classes
Course participants must be experienced shooters who possess the basic knowledge and skills of safe gun handling and handgun shooting. They must also have the basic knowledge skills and attitudes taught in the NRA's Basic Personal Protection in the Home course. Validation of shooting experience will require the following:

• NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home Course Certificate
• Passing the Pre-Course Evaluation

This course will develop in students the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective, and responsible use of a concealed handgun for self-defense outside of the home. This course is a minimum of 9 hours for Level I and an additional 5 hours for Level II and may take more time as required to meet the mandatory performance objectives.

ADVANCED PERSONAL PROTECTION SCENARIO TRAINING:

This is a hybrid class that builds on personal protection in and out of the home principles in order to address current threats. A fast paced interactive curriculum designed to mitigate exposure to mob based violence whether you are on foot, in your vehicle or at home. We also discuss threats to your person from increased levels of violent crime due to cuts in Police funding. Strategies around risk avoidance, the do's and don'ts of engaging individuals or a mob are the primary focus. If you must engage with a firearm and how to safely withdraw are also covered.

A range session is included where we hone target acquisition skills, run and shoot/don't shoot drills, shoot from cover and disadvantaged positions as well as engaging multiple targets. What to do if you must shoot and how to greet responding police officers round out the discussion. This is an advanced level class. You must bring a personal defense firearm and be a competent and confident gun handler.

Prescreening is required for this class.

REFUSE TO BE A VICTIM SEMINAR

The seminar includes classroom instruction on a variety of crime prevention strategies, from criminal psychology to automobile crimes to cyber crime. Seminars can vary in length, and may be modified to suit the needs of a particular audience.

This is not a firearms instruction course, and does not include instruction in physical combat self-defense. Seminars teach about common weaknesses that criminals may take advantage of, and teaches a variety of corrective measures that are practical, inexpensive, and easy to follow. Strategies include home security, carjack avoidance techniques, cyber safety, and use of personal safety devices. 

Students will receive the Refuse To Be A Victim student handbook, NRA Refuse To Be A Victim® brochure, NRA Become A Refuse To Be A Victim® Instructor Brochure, Refuse To Be A Victim® Firearms Supplement, and a course completion certificate.

NRA Pistol Instructor Training
Intended for experienced pistol shooters who have completed the NRA Basic Instructor Training this course will develop NRA Certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course. The course is a minimum of 11 hours and covers the following topics:

• Candidates must also receive 90 percent or better on the written exam.

NRA Range Safety Officer & Chief RSO Training

These two classes enable qualified candidates to obtain both the RSO and CRSO certifications. You must have an active BIT (Basic Instructor Training) to take the classes. An appropriate NRA document identifying  completion of the BIT within the last 2 years must be presented.

The prerequisite for RSO is familiarity with different types of firearms. The prerequisite for CRSO is the successful completion of the RSO class and, of course, an active BIT.

Duration: Both the RSO and CRSO classes run about 6 hours depending on the number of students.

Upon successful completion, students receive both the RSO and CRSO certifications from the NRA. There is a separate fee paid directly to the NRA for registering the certifications. This will be clearly identified in class.
