Since at least the 1980s, they have been uniformly hostile to the very idea of gun ownership. They take this position despite the fact that this freedom is enshrined in our history and in the U.S. Constitution. By doing so, they have strayed from their mission of treating people. In view of this history, it is encouraging and perhaps even surprising that the national specialty society of ear, nose and throat surgeons—the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS)—has adopted an official position statement endorsing firearm suppressors (silencers) for hearing preservation.

42 of 50 states permit use of suppressors. Hollywood films infer these devices silence the sound, they do not. Purchasing a suppressor requires a tax stamp purchase, a rigorous back ground check and a personal interview with the ATF. The average cost of a suppressor is $1000 and it takes several months for the process to complete. This is many more times difficult than buying a handgun.
