| Compromise Bill Simultaneously Introduced and Passed with No Hearing, Now Moves to Assembly
Tuesday August 2, 2016:
|Following an outpouring of gun owner opposition to the State Senate’s sudden attempt to override Governor Christie’s veto of S805 / A1211 (so called “domestic violence” legislation), the override vote was cancelled and the Senate instead took the highly unusual step of simultaneously introducing and passing substitute “compromise” legislation without a hearing.
The text of the new legislation, S2483, is not yet available online, but the bill passed with significant bi-partisan support in a 32-0 vote. After the bill text and vote tally become available online, we will provide our detailed analysis of the legislation along with the vote tally. The legislation now moves to the Assembly.
Thank you for your efforts to stop the override of Governor Christie’s veto, which were successful. While the floor speeches and initial news coverage seem to indicate that the replacement legislation addresses several gun owner concerns, we can only assess the new legislation after we review its text.
