State Outdoor Pistol Championships 2003 

The 2003 State Championship was conducted over the weekend of September 26-28, 2003, at the South River Pistol Club in South River.  Some 77 shooters from six states came to compete for the awards, obtained from our sponsors through the efforts of Kathy Chatterton and David Lange.  

  • Al Dorman, of Delaware, was the overall match winner with a score of 2625 (out of 2700).  

  • Dave Lange of Glen Rock was New Jersey State Champion, with a score of 2617.  

  • Kathy Chatterton, also of Glen Rock, was High Woman, with 2596

  • John Gemmill, of Cliffwood Beach, was High Senior, with 2597

  • Kenneth Lund, of Green Brook, was High Junior with 2416

New Jersey Class winners were:

  • Dave Lange, Glen Rock, High Master, 2617

  • Kevin Ball, Englishtown, Master, 2604

  • Jim Aglione, Teaneck, Expert, 2555

  • Craig Ward, Morris Plains, Sharpshooter, 2485

  • Richard Cabana, Boonton Township, Marksman, 2338

Each of the overall class winners (Al Dorman, Master Richard Baum of New York, Jim Aglione, Craig Ward, and Richard Cabana) won Springfield Armory .45 cal. pistols!

The highest scoring New Jersey shooters, based on scores in the .22 National Match Course, earned honors by achieving membership on the State Pistol Team in the NRA's Postal Match.  Those shooters were:

  • Kathy Chatterton    293-17X

  • John Gemmill         293-11X

  • Kevin Ball               292-12X

  • Allan Kutyla            291-14X

  • Bill Vargo                291-13X

  • David Lange            291-11X

Medal winners in the Leg Match were as follows:

  • Chris Sobers   277-4x    First Place, Gold Medal

  • Allan Kutyla    275-5x    Second Place, Silver Medal

  • David Lange    273-6x    Third Place, Bronze Medal

New Jersey Pistol Shooters Come In Third In The Nation
The NRA conducts a Postal Pistol Match each year among participating states. Scores are based on individual performance in the .22 National Match Course fired as part of the State Championship.

In 2003, New Jersey came in third, behind teams from Washington and Michigan. Team members (and scores) were:
