High Power Rifle
League 2002
The High Power Rifle
League shoots the National Match Course each month from April to
September. This year we were able to complete all six matches as
scheduled. Many years we are forced to use the rain date in October.
Medals are given out to shooters who participated in at least four of
the six matches. Anyone firing in more than four matches had their
lowest scores deleted. There are fifty rounds per match so everyone is
judged on their highest 200 rounds total.
High Master Class shooter Rich Rennert won the title of Overall
Champion with a 1949-70X out of the qualifying 200 rounds. Rich is the
only serious shooter in the league that is still using a bolt gun to
compete. Obviously he sees no reason to switch.
Ken Meise took the Master Class Champion with a 1941-58X so he
was right behind Rich for the Overall title. Ken shoots an AR-15 type of
rifle and always scores at or near the top.
A new league participant but obviously not a new shooter, Rick
Hemsley, easily captured the Expert Class Champion award with a
1919-43X. This is his first year shooting in the league and I hope not
the last.
Bob Steinhoff’s 1873-42X enabled him to become the Sharpshooter
Class Champion. Bob has been shooting the league for years and his
perseverance has finally paid off.
Felix Tsimmerman, Another regular league shooter had a very good
year totaling 1774-17X to take the Marksman Class Champion title. Look
for Felix’s name in the Sharpshooter class next year.
There were forty-five match contestants eligible for medals by shooting
at least 200 rounds this year. Of these, fifteen were awarded medals
including those listed above. The following are the other medal
recipients:
Master Class
Bill Elster – First
Bill Theesfeld – Second
Roger Standfast – Third
Expert Class
Richard Nordberg – First
Mike Bodner – Second
Steve Mandrackie – Third
We offer many thanks to John Flyntz, Paul Lemke and Will Jones
for serving as line and pit officers during the season. We could not
have the league without their help and dedication.
If you’re interested in finding out more about the National Match
Course and how we shoot it at Cherry Ridge, come to the seminar that’s
held every year in March. It can’t hurt you and, if you shoot a match,
I guarantee that you will not shoot the lowest score ever. That’s
already been done.
