YouthFest 2005 - 1 2 3 4 5

Over 50 volunteers hosted the Association’s annual introduction to the shooting sports for young people aged 10 to 18. After an introduction and thorough safety briefing, our guests enjoyed the opportunity to to experience the satisfaction of dusting clay targets with a 20 gauge shotgun, the finesse of shooting .22 target rifles at both falling plates and paper targets, the thrill of firing high power rifles and the flash, boom and smoke of black powder muzzleloaders.

Range coordinators Judy Storms, Steve Potts, George Lees, Dennis O'Brien and Jerry Martin, working as a team with Range Officers John Healey, Jim Bresett, Vito Antico, John Koppinger and Frank Zarney kept everything running smoothly.

Food service gurus and chefs extraordinaire, Anthony Alampi and Steve Chapman, assisted by a hardy crew of volunteers, made short work of feeding a ravenous crowd of over 200 youths, parents and instructors. Frank Sevean performed his usual feats of logistical legerdemain making sure all of the necessary supplies and comestibles were at hand when required. Craig Saracco helped with the heavy lifting to set up on Friday and then returned bright and early on Saturday to direct traffic before taking on a full day of instruction.

Our dedicated crew of Certified NRA Instructors was augmented this year by three members of the Unit Marksmanship Team of 108th Air Refueling Wing of the NJ Air National Guard. Team captain and ANJRPC member Andy Kuhtik, Joe Burkel and Jimmy Johnson made the trek up from McGuire AFB to work with us. Thanks, guys.

As you can imagine, we go through a lot of supplies in the course of the day’s shooting and this year we enjoyed the generosity of local merchants who donated targets, clay birds and ammunition. Thanks to Speedwell Targets of Middlesex, Ray’s Sport Shop in North Plainfield, and The Silver Bullet of Rockaway. The NRA provided tee shirts and certificates for all participants and caps for the staff as part of their Shooting Sports Camp program and as usual all of you who attend Friends of the NRA dinners and otherwise contribute to the NRA Foundation play a major role in enabling this activity. Thank you.

Vince Trossello, ANJRPC Regional Vice President & Event Organizer
