Tenth
Cavalry Open
House: Six
and Counting
On June 18th, the
10th Cavalry Gun Club held its sixth and most successful Open House at the Range Event.
The turnout this year was the best to date. Approximately two hundred
enthusiastic people attended this years’ celebration, sponsored in
conjunction with ANJRPC and supported by a grant from the NRA
Foundation. The weather was beautiful, easily one of the 10 best days so
far.
Attendees began arriving at about 8:15 AM.
The slow trickle increased and by 9:15 or so the club house was almost
full. After a firearms safety and instructional briefing the crowd was
divided into three groups, and it was off to the range to practice what
was just learned. Each participant got to try their hand at rifle, pistol,
and shotgun, and all were genuinely enthusiastic about the chance to
shoot. Immediately after the second range session was completed it was
time to break for lunch.
The past several years has seen a
partnership between the Tenth Cav and C.O.R.E. (The Congress of Racial
Equality) take root and blossom. As in past years, Mr. Dakhar Holmes
came to represent them. This year Mr. Lindsay Hausner, (on
the left in the photo with 10th Cav. President Jerry Martin), also
attended. (He is, speaking during lunch about the need for minorities and other
people of color to unite and let politicians know that they cannot take
our rights away. It was a brief yet thought provoking speech. C.O.R.E.
also supported our event this year by coordinating with our NYC Chapter
President, Krey Lorick, and bringing over several C.O.R.E. members via a
van. By all accounts the C.O.R.E. contingent had a wonderful time. C.O.R.E.
has pledged their support to the Tenth Cav, and they have been true to
their word. The Tenth Cavalry Gun Club, Inc. wishes to thank Niger Innis
and his organization for supporting and participating in the Tenth Cav’s
Open House.
During there was also a brief ceremony
inside the club house to honor Det. Leon Herbert. Det.
Herbert is the community affairs officer for the Newark Police Dept, and
the organizer and founder of the Law Enforcement Explorer group in Newark.
Leon mentors and guides a group of young men and women from the inner
city, some of whom have dreams of careers in law enforcement
After lunch it was back to the range for
the third and final session of shooting. Having enjoyed a safe,
fun-filled, event, the crowd came back to the range house. The group was
then treated to prizes, based on a question and answer period revolving
around that morning’s gun safety and handling lessons.
All in all, it was as advertised, a great
day of firearms safety and shooting, with plenty of surprises. The Tenth
Cavalry Gun Club has received several emails and phone calls from guests
who attended the event. The feedback has been all very positive. The club
was well represented, as 15 members showed up to help out and instruct.
The Tenth Cavalry Gun Club, Inc. wishes to
express it thanks to the many people and supporters, without whose help,
this year’s open house event would not have been as successful as it was.
Thanks to the ANJRPC for the use of their facility, Head Range Safety
Officer, Jim Bresett, and his staff.
The
Tenth Cavalry Gun Club would also like to thank the following instructors,
and staff, without whose help, events like this would not be possible.
This was undoubtedly one of the best volunteer turnouts of any Cherry
Ridge event, ever, as over 40 volunteers gave of their time.
