Summer Biathlon
2007
The ANJRPC, in
conjunction with NJ Summer Biathlon, is set to host the 2007 Summer
Series at Cherry Ridge Range. Summer Biathlon, a sport that combines
rifle marksmanship with cross-country running, is a spin-off of the
winter Olympic sport of cross-country skiing and shooting.
Competitors, starting
in waves of 1 per minute, begin by running a one mile loop that brings
them to the shooting range. They lay down, pick up a .22 rifle, and
shoot 5 shots at metal knock-down targets 25 or 50 meters away.
Competitors then jump up and walk to the end of the range. For every
missed shot, a penalty loop is run. Biathletes run another one mile loop
and come back to the range. This time it is five shots from the standing
position. After one last mile of running, the race ends with a dash to
the finish.
Beginners are welcome
and all the necessary equipment is provided. A safety and
familiarization clinic for first-timers is offered before each race.
Celebrating its 20th year as an organized sport in the United States,
New Jersey has hosted an annual summer series since 1991.
