The seventh annual Cal Ellis Memorial Junior Scholarship Awards were presented by Scholarship Committee Chair Larry Braico at the ANJRPC Annual Meeting. The 2004 awards included two first prize scholarships of $1500 each and a runner-up scholarship of $500.

Winners were selected from applications color-coded to protect the applicants’ anonymity. In addition to Larry Braico, the panel of judges included Tammie Maddox, Bob Viden, Peggy Bodner, Mike Cutrera (all ANJRPC Regional Vice Presidents) and ANJRPC member Steve Serna.

First Prize Award Winners

Michelle Bauer of Blackwood, a 2004 graduate of Triton Regional High School, is advancing her education this fall at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. In eight years participating as a junior shooter, Michelle has achieved these classifications in the following disciplines: Expert – Outdoor Prone; Expert – Outdoor 3-Position; Sharpshooter – International 3-Position Outdoor; Master – 3-Position Indoor; Sharpshooter – 4-Position Indoor; Master – International 3-Position Indoor.

In 2000, Michelle was Sub-Junior Champion for 3-Position at Camp Perry, and USA Shooting National Champion Women’s Sport Rifle 3x20 and Air Rifle Sub Junior Champion. In 2002, she was National Junior Olympic Women’s Sport Rifle 3x20 Intermediate Junior Champion , and took 8th place overall after the finals. In 2003, she took 2nd place National Junior Women’s Sport Rifle 3x20 Intermediate Junior and 8th place overall after the final.

Danielle Cardone of Allendale, a 2004 graduate of Northern Regional High School, is furthering her education at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Danielle’s shooting experience is limited so far to her father’s instruction on the safe handling and respect for firearms. In keeping with the criteria for the consideration of these awards by the judges, Danielle, in addition to her academic and athletic achievements as a champion swimmer, seems to have impressed the judged with her overall outstanding status as a young, caring human being.

Runner Up Winner

Daniel Szeszko of South Amboy is a graduate of South Amboy High School who is furthering his education at Middlesex County College. In his five years as a competitive junior shooter, Dan has garnered classifications in: Outdoor Prone, Indoor Prone, Outdoor 3-Position, International 3-Position Outdoor, Indoor 3-Position, and Indoor 4-Position.

The competition is open to any New Jersey high school senior with verifiable plans to further his or her education. Application forms for the 2005 scholarships will be available in the spring.

Each of the winners was presented with an award plaque. This year’s plaques carry a quote from former President Ronald Reagan, who passed away earlier this year. President Reagan was a Life Member of the NRA, and the first sitting President to address the NRA’s Annual Meeting. “The Constitution does not say Government shall decree the right to keep and bear arms. The Constitution says ‘the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.’”

The Association gratefully acknowledges all of the contributors to the Cal Ellis Memorial Scholarship Fund, both those who contributed throughout the year, as well as those who contributed at the Annual Meeting. We would also like to thank the NRA Foundation. Without their help these young achievers could not be so generously recognized.
