NRA Family Shooting Sports Camp 2005

On Saturday September 17, in the face of threatened tropical downpours as the remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia swept through the area, a team of almost sixty NRA instructors and volunteers played host to two hundred guests at Cherry Ridge Range for our annual NRA Family Shooting Sports Camp.

The event, conducted under the NRA Shooting Sports Camp format, is designed to introduce new shooters and potential shooters to the various enjoyable opportunities available in the shooting sports.

Although the threatening weather cut down the potential attendance, the rain held off all day and our guests had the opportunity to experience firing shotguns, handguns and .22 rifles under the one-on-one supervision of experienced NRA Certified Instructors.

This was the fourth large outreach event of the year at Cherry Ridge and our team functioned like a well oiled machine under the direction of range coordinators George Lees, Joe Westfield, Steve Potts and Chuck Lehnert.

Mike Bodner gave an outstanding briefing on firearms safety and shooting fundamentals after which our guests went out and fired off almost 10,000 rounds of ammunition at over 2000 clay birds and 800 paper targets, virtually wiping out stock for the 2005 season. Again, thanks to Ray’s Sport Shop, The Silver Bullet, Speedwell Target and White Flyer for the generous contributions which helped make our outreach season possible. We also are pleased to acknowledge the major grant we receive from the NRA Foundation, and the contribution of the NRA Shooting Sports Camp program which make theses events possible.

In addition to a taste of the shooting sports, our interested guests had a great opportunity to learn about the mission and programs of the NRA and the ANJRPC. We acquired a substantial number of new NRA and Association members as a result of the day’s activities.

Our thanks to the great crew of volunteers who worked in the heat and humidity to make the day possible. They are:
