Understanding New Jersey Firearms Laws

New Jersey firearms and weapons law is a tangled web of uncorrelated statutes, rules, and court decisions which require special legal expertise to comprehend. Accordingly, ANJRPC strongly urges you to seek competent legal advice from an attorney who is familiar with New Jersey firearms and weapons law before taking any action relating to firearms and weapons. ANJRPC members are entitled to address basic legal questions to several attorneys retained by ANJRPC for that purpose. Click Legal Advice - NJ Firearms Laws for this list.

There are also several reference materials available that you may wish to be aware of:

  • NRA-ILA research and information materials. The NRA Institute For Legislative Action provides summaries of state gun laws free of charge. Click on this link:
     http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/StateLaws.aspx?ST=NJ or call 1-800-392-8683.

  • Nappen II: New Jersey Gun, Knife & Weapon Law. This book is a reference for laypersons written by a New Jersey firearms attorney. Click on this link: http://www.evannappen.com/nappenii/ , or call 732-222-2700.

  • Packing.org website. This is a relatively new website purporting to articulate rules regarding concealed carry of handguns throughout the country. Click on this link www.packing.org.

Please note that the foregoing are for reference only and should not be relied upon as legal advice or any other form of guidance. There is no substitute for competent legal advice, and the failure to obtain current, competent legal advice from a qualified attorney could result in your inadvertent violation of law, for which civil and criminal penalties in New Jersey can be very severe. Do not try to interpret New Jersey law yourself.
