Smart Gun Bill Passed in NJ
by Nancy Ross

The Smart Gun bill passed the Senate on Monday, December 16 by a vote of 29 to 11 -- 5 against and 6 abstentions.  The bill will likely be signed into law by Governor McGreevy.

Prior to the vote, Senator Gerry Cardinale made a passionate plea to keep the exemption for guns used in competitions sanctioned by the Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs. His plea fell on deaf ears, and the Senate voted in support of the Assembly version of the bill. The final bill exempts only the sale and transfer of guns used in competitions sanctioned by the Civilian Marksmanship program, the International Olympics Committee or USA Shooting.

Here's the list of Senators who voted "No" (N) or Abstained (A). Remember an abstention (A) is the same as a no (N) vote.

Martha Bark - A
Tony Bucco - N
James Cafiero - A
Gerry Cardinale - N
Leonard Connor - A
Walter Kavanaugh - N
Leonard Lance - N
Robert Littell - N
Robert Martin - A
John Matheussen - A
Stephen Sweeney - A

If you live in one of these Senator's districts, please call to thank them for voting against the bill. They stood up to their party's leadership.  We need more Senators (and Assembly members) with principles and guts.
